Farms in the Summer are the best! (Sauvie Island)

Sauvie Island Farm Trip!!

A friend and I heard on the Sauvie Island facebook page that they were going to be cutting their prices on "you-pick" peaches if you bought as many pounds as you could.
Come to find out they are $1/lb! OMG!

My friend and I decided to go out to Sauvie Island Farms and then split the cost. We left with about 116 lbs of peaches. We asked another friend if she wanted to buy a flat for $20 and she did. Our cost became approximately $116/2 people-$20=     $38/each!
***They also had "you-pick" corn that were 4 for $1.00!!!**

When we got home I thought about the best way to preserve the corn. Then I thought about those packages that you buy at the store where the corn cobs are broken in half and packaged with plastic wrap. THEN I remembered that they cost about $5 for a package of 2 cobs!
I decided to take the corn that we bought, cut them in half, put them in bags and freeze them.

When we got back from the farm we got to work making all kinds of goodies!!!

First, we cut up some peaches.
My son, Tristan, admiring a peach.
In the process of cutting up the peaches we found a pit that had split in half. I had never seen the inside of a pit until then. Inside was a seed and inside the seed was a aloe vera type gel. Very cool!

Second, we dehydrated some peach slices for a snack.

Third, we made peach butter! YUMMY!!! **We cleaned the peaches, left the skins on and blended it all up before we cooked it down. That way the nutrients are still in there.**
**We also replaced sugar with AGAVE and WOW what a difference!**

Fourth, we made some mini-cinni rolls with peach bits inside and a peach syrup.

Lastly, we used what was left over from the peach butter and used it for a topping for pancakes and french toast.

Hope you all can get out the Sauvie Island before all the peaches are gone!

CHEERS!

  1. I love the pic of Tristan in peach heaven...Nice cooking outfit, little Chef!
I don't see peach cobbler, did you not make cobbler with peach ice cream and peach syrup?
My grandma, when she made peach jam, or apricot jam, always put one of the seeds in the jar. You don't want to eat too many of them, they are bitter and a little hard on the system. But they add a nice bitter touch to the jam. :)
