Giving back to the community! Better than you think!

Hi Everyone!

Sorry ti has been a few days since the last post.  I am going to be posting several posts today! Woohoo! There is jsut so much to tlak about this week and I am excited to share!

Giving Back to the Community!

When you think about giving back to the community what comes to mind first?
  • Helping at a homeless shelter?
  • helping aneighbor?
  • Giving someone a few bucks because they are hungry?
  • Volunteering at the food bank?
  • Volunteering at a church if you are religious or not?
  • Volunteering to foster dogs that will need homes?
  • and MORE....
Whatever you think is a way to give back to your community you should write it down for reference for now or later.
There have been several times that I have given back to my community with no strings attached. That being said, there is something to be said for good and bad Karma!
Here are some of the ways that I have given back to the community:
  • I joined a program for troubled students in middle school that helped the kids teach dogs "manners." We taught them to sit up, roll over, speak, etc.
  • I have volunteered at the food bank bagging food to send to disadvantages families and bringing in canned food from the donation bins.
  •  I volunteered at the Washington School for the Deaf. If you do not know about them please visit their website and see what they are all about. http://www.wsd.wa.gov/
  • I have also volunteered at Chestnut Lane Assisted and Independent Facilitty for the Deaf . Again, if you do not know about them you should check out their website. http://www.ardia.org/_websites/chestnutlane/index.html
  • I have volunteered to read for the elderly when I lived in Ashland at Skylark Assisted Living Facility
  • Also, whenever my husband, son and I go out o eat and we are not finished with our meals we ask for boxes. When we get out the door we ussualy try and find a homeless person to give food to. This in turn saves us money and gives them a substantial mean until their next one.
  • Lastly, as of right now I have set up an ASL (American Sign Language) camp that solely focuses on the development of ASl skills for hearing and Deaf students that are just learning ASL. This is also free! This will be ending in a week but this has been so helpful to the students who are baby learners or transitioning into the Sign Language Interpreting Program at Portland Community College.
When giving back to your community you want to think about all the different ways that you can give back. the reason for doing this is one day you will be in a position where you will need help. This is where KARMA comes in.

Short Story

Yesterday, I had the ASL camp and needed to go to an appointment and be there by 4:30pm. I left from PCC, met up with my husband and son, tried to leave there to go to my appointment, took the wrong bus, next bus broke down, took over an hour to try and get there, decided to go back home instead, got to the next bus and that bus broke down. Shortly after that nbus breaking down I found out there was another bus near by that was leaving soon. When I got to that bus the bus driver told me my ticket had expired and that I needed to get a new ticket from the ticket machine. I went to the machine to put in my last $5 and what happens!? That machine will not take my $5. (sigh!) So, I stood there trying to get it to work. A man offers to actually buy me a ticket. I tried to be nice and refuse when a woman walks by and hands me her ticket that was going to expire an hour after the time that I was leaving! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!?

This is why giving back can be beneficial not just to other people but to you as well!!

  1. altruism, doing for others, makes a difference. Everyone, regardless of position in life, should remember that being a citizen of this country means that you do what it is you do, because you must. Unless you hate what you do, you must do something that is gratifying to you, before it can gratify others. Entrepeneurs of everything, get there!
