Cream of Wheat/Farina

Breakfast Idea

I know there are a lot of people that really like Cream of Wheat but did you know that you can buy it in bulk? Did you know it's about half the price for 2 boxes worth?

I have found FARINA. It IS Cream of Wheat but this is the name of it in the bulk section. I have been able to find it at Fred Meyer, Winco, Whole Foods and New Seasons. As far as the price it depends on where you go.

Homemade Farina for Breakfast

(This is for 3 people)

1 C Farina
2 C Water
1 tsp Olive oil
2.5 Tbsp Chia Seeds
4-5 Tbsp Agave
1/4 C Raisins
1/2 C Milk ( you can use Almond, Rice or other)

1. In a pot bring 2 c water to a boil and add olive oil

2. When the water is boiling add the farina and stir for a minute and then turn the heat down to low.

3. Add the chia seeds, agave and raisins.

5. Pour Farina into a bowl and add as much milk as you want. I usually put about 1/2 c 1% milk.

6. You can add fresh fruit, etc.

Have a great day and happy Farina-ing!

Volunteering at Farms

Hi everyone!

Today, I would like to talk about GLEANING and the amazing affects it can have on the community, your budget and your stomachs!

Over the past 5 years we have needed to find assistance with food. We found that we were not eligible for food stamps or assistance other than an occasional food pantry. SO, what did we do?
A friend of mine had told me about a specific farm where people go to volunteer and get food in return. I thought this was a great idea. So, I went to go check it out. It is at a farm in Sherwood. This is about 20 miles from me. I had done gleaning before and I had to choose a number and I would have to wait hours and almost always be the last in line.

The farm that my son and I have been going to is called Heart 2 Heart Farms. These people are truly amazing with how they have built and run their farm. If you don't mind getting dirty then this is a place for you!

Good Neighbor Food Pantry  has paired up with Heart 2 Heart in order to build community and feed the people and families who need food. It has been such an AMAZING experience getting to know all the people that go there, help unload the food truck, feed the animals, etc. And we have learned a lot.

Cleanup before the truck arrives

Truck Arrives

What a community!

My kiddo named this one "Lickey" because it wouldn't stop licking him. lol

If you don't mind getting dirty, want a good opportunity to teach your kids something and have the time, then go and check out the  Heart 2 Heart Farms and the Good Neighbor Pantry.

Take care and happy farmin'!

Life...and a Healthy Breakfast

Even life can take over and the only thing you can do is just HOP RIGHT BACK ON! (I apologize for the delay in posts)

"Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it."

-Dennis P. Kimbro

HERE.....WE........GO!!!

There are at least a handful of times where my son will ask me to make him oatmeal. There are 2 key ingredients that he ALWAYS requests to have: vanilla and cinnamon. For this particular recipe I kicked it up a notch and have allowed for a meal that might be good for people who have digestive sensitivities/issues, or who might just have a hard time getting their brain going in the morning. This recipe is also good if you eat breakfast and then feel hungry an hour later. This will allow your body more time between breakfast, snack and lunch.

Tristan's Oatmeal
1.5 C Oatmeal
1 C Oatmeal
1 TBS Olive Oil
2-3 TBS Agave
1 tsp Chia Seeds
1tsp Cinnamon
1tsp Vanila
1 C Coconut Milk
1/3 C Raisins

1. Pour water into a pot with the olive oil and allow it to come to a boil.

2. Add the oatmeal and stir for about 5-10 minutes.

3. Turn the heat down to low and add agave, raisins, cinnamon and chia seeds.

4. Lastly, add the coconut milk and VOILA!

Sometimes the best meals for the morning are complicated in flavor but simple in prep :)

Happy Oat'n!
